Roblox Age Estimation: What Parents Need to Know

Roblox age estimation aims to reduce access to mature content and limit unsafe interactions. While it helps, parents still play the most important role in keeping kids safe online.

Roblox Age Estimation

Roblox age estimation has been recently rolled out

Key Summary

  • Roblox to use facial age estimation to help verify users’ ages
  • It is designed to prevent adults from posing as children and to limit underage access to mature features
  • The technology is provided by Persona, a third-party tool that deletes images after processing
  • No ID is required, no account is created and no ongoing profile is stored
  • It makes Roblox safer, but not safe! Active parental involvement is still essential

Roblox Age Estimation: How It Works

Roblox age estimation asks users to take a selfie or short video. That image is securely analysed by Persona, a third-party service that estimates the user’s age using artificial intelligence. The estimated age is then sent to Roblox, and the image is deleted shortly after.

Based on the result, Roblox may limit or allow access to specific games, features or social tools including chat.

Once the age of the user is determined, they will be allocated into an age group: Under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or 21+. According to Roblox, users will be able to chat with those in their own age group and similar age groups.

About Persona: What Parents Should Know

Persona is the technology partner behind Roblox’s new age estimation feature. It helps verify age without requiring ID documents like a passport or birth certificate.

According to both Roblox and Persona:

  • No Persona account is created
  • Images are encrypted during processing and deleted shortly after
  • No ongoing identity profile is stored
  • Data is not used for advertising or sold to third parties

However, there are still some important things to consider:

  • Biometric data (such as facial scan) is sensitive, even if deleted after use
  • Persona is a private company, and its deletion process is not independently audited
  • Facial analysis may be less accurate for children from diverse backgrounds or with atypical facial development
  • Data is processed in the United States, where privacy laws differ from those in Australia

So while Persona is designed to minimise risk, it is not completely risk-free. Families should understand what is involved and decide what they are comfortable with before using the feature.

What This Does Not Do

Roblox age estimation is a helpful tool, but it has limits. Even with this feature, children can still:

  • Chat with strangers
  • Overshare personal information
  • Encounter inappropriate content
  • Behave in unsafe or risky ways

This feature helps reduce some risks, but it does not remove them entirely. Ongoing support and digital education at home remain essential.

What Parents Can Do

Even with improved safety features, parental involvement is still the best line of defence. Here are some simple but effective steps you can take:

  • Talk regularly about games, friends and online behaviour
  • Limit chat to friends only or turn it off altogether
  • Keep devices in shared spaces for better visibility
  • Review Roblox safety settings often, especially after new updates
  • Teach kids how to block and report when something feels unsafe

FAQs

Is Persona safe?

Persona follows strong privacy and security practices and deletes images after processing. However, because it involves biometric data and uses overseas processing, it is not completely risk-free. Families should consider the trade-offs before using it.

Can my child skip Roblox age estimation?

Yes. Age estimation is optional, but some features or experiences on Roblox may not be available without it.

Does it always get the age right?

No. Like all AI-based systems, it makes an estimate. Children who look older or younger than their age may be misclassified.

Can my child still connect and play with adults the know and trust?

Final Thought

The Roblox age estimation tool is a step forward in protecting younger players. It may support age-appropriate experiences and offer an alternative to uploading sensitive documents.

But it is not a safety guarantee. The technology comes with its own limitations, and families should weigh the privacy trade-offs before using it.

The most effective safety tools are still the ones at home open conversations, clear boundaries and regular check-ins.
